Why I have a "Create page" button

An unlinked page is better than no page.

When I was at Socialtext, the ability to create a new page at random via a "create a new page" button or link was seen as a negative. The logic was that by forcing people to create a nascent page that is already linked, the wiki would force strong inter-linking of pages that help make the wiki stronger.

In reality, what I've seen in others and felt myself was that creating an impedance to making pages makes users less likely to create pages. This is especially true with novices, who must have explained to them something like "First you edit a page you want to link from, and then edit that page, and put a link to the page you really want to create, and save it, and then click on that page and you'll have the option to edit." That level of complexity for people is a big impediment.
